Accepting only the exceptional, from tea garden to tea cup

In 1983, John Harney embarked on a mission to share his passion for great tea. From the first six teas we offered then, to the 300 varieties we offer today, it has been a remarkable journey.

Now, Harney's is still committed to our main purpose, providing high-quality tea that is a great value. Whether you are looking for a morning pick-me-up, a tasty mid-day treat, or a soothing cup before bed, Harney & Sons Fine Teas has the perfect blend for you.

Cheers, from our family to yours.

Product Information
The base of African Autumn, our popular herbal blend, is rooibos, a legume also known as "red bush" native to South Africa. Rooibos is oxidized, which changes the color to red, and when brewed, it looks similar to the red of "black" tea. Loaded with antioxidants, fans love the brightness of the rooibos, accented by cranberry and citrus. This is an herbal blend and contains no caffeine.

Each HT tin contains 20 tea sachets. Each sachet brews one 12 oz. cup of tea.

HT: UNIQUE & UNCOMMON TEA BLENDS A family collaboration gave rise to HT: Unique & Uncommon Tea Blends. HT is grounded in the Harney tradition of providing the finest quality full-leaf teas and herbs, all packed in a pyramid tea sachet. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink this in the late afternoon at work without it affecting my sleep later?

Yes, African Autumn is 100% caffeine-free, so it's designed for late-day sipping. Many home-office drinkers use it as a 4 p.m. or 8 p.m. cup without any impact on their sleep schedule.

Is this a good replacement for afternoon coffee during deep work sessions?

It's an excellent caffeine-free bridge between morning coffee and evening wind-down. The warmth, aroma, and ritual of brewing a cup help maintain focus and a steady work rhythm without a caffeine spike.

How long does one pyramid sachet take to steep during a busy workday?

African Autumn typically steeps in about 5 to 7 minutes for a full-flavored cup, which is short enough to fit into a quick break between meetings. You can leave the sachet in longer for a stronger cup.

Will the aroma of this tea be distracting in a shared office or Zoom call?

The scent is light and pleasant rather than overpowering. Most coworkers find it subtle, and many report it as a calming background aroma that supports a focused environment.

Is the tin easy to store in an office pantry or desk drawer?

Yes, the tin is compact and airtight, so it tucks neatly into a pantry shelf, desk drawer, or break-room cabinet. The lid keeps the sachets fresh between uses.

How does this compare to green or black tea for sustained focus?

Green and black tea offer caffeine-driven focus with a potential crash, while African Autumn delivers a calmer, jitter-free focus. It's ideal for people who want steady energy without a stimulant.

I'm worried the tin will look out of place on a professional desk. How is it styled?

The tin has a clean, decorative finish that reads as professional rather than gimmicky. Many home-office workers keep it visible on a credenza or shelf as part of their workspace aesthetic.

Is this a smart choice for a shared office pantry with multiple preferences?

Yes, the rooibos base is mild, naturally sweet, and caffeine-free, which makes it widely appealing. Pairing it with other HT herbal variants covers coworkers who want different flavors.

Can I brew this quickly between meetings without a kettle or fancy setup?

All you need is hot water and a mug. The pyramid sachet acts as both the strainer and the serving filter, so there's nothing extra to clean up between calls.

Will the rooibos flavor hold up if I add a splash of cream or milk for focus sessions?

Yes, rooibos pairs beautifully with cream, oat milk, or a splash of dairy. The cranberry-citrus notes stay present rather than getting drowned out, which is part of why it works well as a long work session brew.

Is this tea distracting to prepare, or does it support a quick focus ritual?

The pyramid sachets make it a 60-second ritual: drop, pour, steep. Many people use the steep time as a deliberate micro-break, which actually supports focus rather than interrupting it.

I work night shifts. Is this safe to drink close to bedtime after work?

Yes, because it's caffeine-free, shift workers can enjoy African Autumn right before sleep after a late shift without it interfering with rest. It's one of the most popular choices for night-shift professionals.

Will this help me stay hydrated during long screen-time hours?

Herbal rooibos counts toward daily fluid intake and contains no sugar or calories, which makes it easy to sip steadily through a long workday. Many people alternate it with water to break up the monotony.

Is it appropriate to brew this in a shared office kitchen without strong odors?

Yes, the aroma is light and fruity rather than pungent. Coworkers typically describe it as pleasant background scent rather than an overpowering kitchen smell.

I'm hesitant to commit to a full tin in case I don't like it. How should I start?

Start with a single 20-count tin to test the flavor profile. If you enjoy it, the 4-pack format offers better per-cup value for stocking a regular office or home-office rotation.

Is the pyramid sachet sturdy enough to leave in during a long work session?

Yes, the sachets are designed for full immersion and don't tear easily. Many drinkers leave the sachet in the mug for 10 minutes or longer while they work without any bitterness or breakage.

How do I brew Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos for the best flavor?

Use one pyramid sachet per 12 oz cup of freshly boiled water (212°F) and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Rooibos is forgiving — you can extend the steep time up to 10 minutes for a stronger, more robust cup without bitterness.

Can I brew this rooibos as iced tea or sun tea?

Yes, African Autumn works beautifully as iced tea. For sun tea, place 4 to 6 sachets in a jar of cold water and let it steep in the sun for 3 to 4 hours. For quick iced tea, brew hot, then pour over ice and add a slice of lemon.

How should I store the tin to keep the sachets fresh?

Keep the lid tightly closed between uses and store the tin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors like spices or coffee. Stored this way, the sachets stay fresh for the full 730-day shelf life.

Is this tea compatible with cream, milk, or non-dairy alternatives?

Yes, African Autumn pairs well with dairy, oat milk, almond milk, and a splash of cream. The rooibos base is robust enough to hold up to additions without losing its cranberry-citrus character.

Is African Autumn compatible with sweeteners like honey or sugar?

Yes, but most drinkers find it sweet enough on its own. If you prefer added sweetness, honey complements the rooibos base particularly well, especially when used as a sick-day or wellness tea.

What's included in the tin when I unbox it?

Each tin contains 20 pyramid sachets of Harney & Sons African Autumn Rooibos. Nothing else is required to brew — just hot water and a mug. The tin itself is decorative and reusable for storage or gifting.

Is this product safe for people with common dietary restrictions?

Yes, African Autumn is naturally caffeine-free, gluten-free, and Kosher certified. It contains no calories and no added sugars, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences.

How long is the shelf life, and is it safe to drink past that date?

Each tin has a 730-day (2-year) shelf life. Rooibos doesn't really 'go bad' past that date, but for the best cranberry-citrus aroma and flavor, we recommend enjoying it within the printed window.

What's the difference between rooibos tea and regular black or green tea?

Rooibos is an herbal tisane from the African red bush plant, naturally caffeine-free and very low in tannins. Black and green tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant and contain caffeine, which gives them a more astringent, sometimes bitter profile. African Autumn delivers the body of black tea with the smoothness of an herbal.
